Free printable word searches — made, checked and given away by one person.
Word Search Zen is a free library of printable word search puzzles — 1,887 puzzles across 123 topics, every one of them a free PDF with the answer key included, sized for standard printer paper.
There’s no catch and no sign-up. Pick a topic, print it, done.
Who runs this site
My name is Jimmy Buchanan and I build and run Word Search Zen on my own, from Australia.
I started it because the free word searches I could find online were mostly bad — low-resolution scans, puzzles with no answer key, pages that wanted an email address before they’d give you a PDF, or grids that turned out to have a word missing once you’d already printed thirty copies for a classroom. I wanted a place where you could find a puzzle on the topic you actually wanted and print it immediately.
So that’s what this is. Every puzzle is generated and checked here, and every one comes with its solution.
How the puzzles are made
Each puzzle is built with a generator made for this site. I choose the topic and the word list, the generator places the words in the grid, and the finished puzzle and its answer key are rendered together as a single PDF.
Word lists are checked before a puzzle goes live: every word has to actually appear in the grid, and the answer key has to match. If you ever find one that doesn’t, please tell me — I’d genuinely rather know.
Who uses it
The library is built with teachers and parents in mind. There are puzzles for every grade from 1st to 9th and for subjects like biology, the water cycle and the American Revolution — the kind of thing that works for early finishers or a cover lesson. The seasonal and holiday sets are there for parties, classrooms and family gatherings. And plenty of people just like word searches.
For journalists and editors
You’re welcome to use any puzzle on this site in your publication, free, with a credit and a link back to the puzzle’s page.
I can also build you something custom — a brain teaser or a themed puzzle made for your story, exclusive to your title — usually within 48 hours, at no cost. If you need a comment on puzzles, printables or what people search for at different times of year, I’m happy to help and will say so plainly when something falls outside what I actually know.

Honesty about how this site is built
I use software, including AI tools, to help draft page descriptions and generate puzzle grids at scale. A real person — me — reviews what goes live. I don’t publish invented statistics, I don’t invent quotes, and I don’t pass off AI output as a real person’s expertise.
