Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition held on 1 and 2 NOVEMBER, when families remember loved ones who have died and welcome their spirits home. It is a celebration of memory, not a scary holiday. The first free word search is built around the home ALTAR, the OFRENDA: orange MARIGOLDS (CEMPASUCHIL), CANDLES, PHOTOGRAPHS of ANCESTORS, PAN DE MUERTO, SUGAR SKULLS, COPAL incense, PAPEL PICADO, a glass of WATER, a dish of SALT and warm ATOLE to drink.
The second sheet covers the wider symbols and customs: La CATRINA, the elegant skeleton linked to the printmaker José Guadalupe POSADA, the CALAVERA and the CALACAS, the CEMETERY VIGIL and the PROCESSION, FACE PAINT, MONARCH butterflies, and the XOLO dog, all part of a TRADITION of REMEMBRANCE across MEXICO. Each sheet is a printable PDF with its answer key. The word list is medium and suits children from about 9 up.
