Two free word searches about the document adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The first finds the people behind it: the COMMITTEE OF FIVE, which included JEFFERSON, ADAMS, FRANKLIN and SHERMAN, the president of Congress John HANCOCK with his famous signature, and fellow SIGNERS such as Benjamin RUSH, Charles CARROLL, John WITHERSPOON, George WYTHE, Richard STOCKTON, Elbridge GERRY and Josiah BARTLETT. Together they are often called the FOUNDERS.
The second sheet is built from the text itself: truths that are SELF EVIDENT, that all men are created EQUAL, with UNALIENABLE RIGHTS to LIFE, LIBERTY and the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS, and that governments draw their power from the CONSENT of the GOVERNED. Then come the GRIEVANCES against KING GEORGE and his TYRANNY, ending in INDEPENDENCE. The word list is medium and suits students from about 9 up; answer keys are included.
