Figurative language says one thing and means another, and these two free word searches let students hunt for the terms and the examples together. Sheet one is about comparison: the SIMILE (BUSY AS A BEE, BRAVE AS A LION, COLD AS ICE, all built on LIKE or as), the METAPHOR (a HEART OF GOLD, a NIGHT OWL), ANALOGY, HYPERBOLE and SYMBOLISM, and the difference between LITERAL and FIGURATIVE MEANING.
Sheet two collects the other devices: the IDIOM (BREAK A LEG, a PIECE OF CAKE, SPILL THE BEANS, COLD FEET), PERSONIFICATION, ONOMATOPOEIA (BUZZ, SIZZLE), the OXYMORON, the PUN, IRONY, UNDERSTATEMENT, the tired CLICHE and the old SAYING. Afterwards, students can sort each example under its device name. The word list runs medium-to-hard, best from about 10 up. Both PDFs print with answer keys.
