Mexican Independence Day is 16 SEPTEMBER. It marks the morning in 1810 when the priest Miguel HIDALGO rang the CHURCH BELL in the town of DOLORES and called people to rise against Spanish rule, the GRITO de Dolores. The first of these two free word searches names the people and places of the war that followed: Ignacio ALLENDE and Juan ALDAMA, José María MORELOS, Vicente GUERRERO, JOSEFA ORTIZ and LEONA VICARIO, the INSURGENTS of NEW SPAIN, and Agustín de ITURBIDE, whose Treaty of CORDOBA confirmed INDEPENDENCE in 1821.

The second sheet is about how the day is celebrated. On the night of the 15th, crowds fill the ZOCALO in Mexico City as the president repeats the grito from the NATIONAL PALACE and the crowd answers VIVA MEXICO, followed by FIREWORKS and CONFETTI. Families share bowls of POZOLE and CHILES EN NOGADA, a dish dressed in the GREEN, WHITE and RED of the TRICOLOR flag, whose emblem shows an EAGLE on a CACTUS holding a SERPENT. The word list is medium and suits children from about 9 up. Both PDFs include answer keys. More in the celebrations word searches and the Cinco de Mayo word searches, a different holiday.
