Cognates (los cognados) are words that look and mean nearly the same in Spanish and English, which makes them the quickest vocabulary win for a new learner. The first of these two free word searches uses two reliable patterns. English -tion becomes Spanish -ción: NACION (nation), EDUCACION, INFORMACION, ESTACION (station), ATENCION, CONVERSACION and CELEBRACION. English -ty becomes -dad: UNIVERSIDAD (university), COMUNIDAD, CURIOSIDAD, ELECTRICIDAD, NECESIDAD, OPORTUNIDAD, REALIDAD and SOCIEDAD.
The second sheet has cognate adjectives and verbs: FAMOSO (famous), DELICIOSO, IMPORTANTE, DIFERENTE, POSIBLE, INTELIGENTE, ELEGANTE and POPULAR, then VISITAR (to visit), PREPARAR, DECIDIR, PRACTICAR, CELEBRAR, EXPLORAR and IMAGINAR. Accents are dropped in the grid, so NACION stands for nación. Ask students to write the English twin beside each word they find. The word list is medium and suits learners from about 10 up. Both PDFs include an answer key. More in the Spanish word searches, including the Spanish greetings word searches.
