Thirty-nine delegates signed the Constitution on September 17, 1787, and the first of these free word searches finds fifteen of them by surname. WASHINGTON, MADISON, FRANKLIN and HAMILTON are the famous ones; the rest are names students often meet for the first time, including Gouverneur and Robert MORRIS, Roger SHERMAN, John DICKINSON, the PINCKNEY cousins, John RUTLEDGE, William PATERSON, James WILSON, Rufus KING, Thomas MIFFLIN, John LANGDON and William BLOUNT.
The second sheet goes inside the Convention in PHILADELPHIA, where DELEGATES met in the STATEHOUSE in SECRECY to replace the ARTICLES of Confederation. The VIRGINIA PLAN and the NEW JERSEY PLAN set LARGE STATES against SMALL STATES over REPRESENTATION until the GREAT COMPROMISE, put forward by CONNECTICUT, created a BICAMERAL Congress; the THREE FIFTHS clause came out of the same DEBATE. The word list is hard in places and suits students from about 10 up. Answer keys are included. See also the Constitution word search and more American history word searches.
