Why These Are the Hardest
Long words are hard to hold in your head while you scan, and unfamiliar ones are harder still, because you can’t guess the next letter. These puzzles lean on both. Several grids share letter patterns (the -OUS and -ICIOUS endings in the vocabulary puzzles, the -ABLE endings in the impossible puzzle), so near-misses are everywhere. The brain teaser and scientific terms puzzles add a different kind of difficulty: words you know well, like PHOTOSYNTHESIS and MITOCHONDRIA, packed into a crowded grid.
