The 8th Grade Line-Up
Eighth grade is capstone year, and the puzzles match its heavier content. Algebra (SLOPE, INTERCEPT, POLYNOMIAL) reflects the algebra-in-8th-grade track many students are on; Geometry backs it up. Science splits three ways — Genetics (ALLELE, HEREDITY, PUNNETT), Astronomy and Physical Science — the trio that dominates 8th grade science standards. American History covers the founding-to-Civil-War sweep taught this year, and Literature plus Vocabulary keep English represented.
Prepping for High School
Next year, nobody slows down for vocabulary. The gap between students who recognise CHROMOSOME and MANIFEST DESTINY on sight and those who do not becomes a grades gap in 9th grade, when textbooks assume the words are already known. These puzzles are one small way to close it early: each one is a concentrated dose of the terms 8th graders are supposed to carry over the summer into their freshman year.
In the Classroom
Teachers tell us the Genetics and Astronomy grids earn their keep during state-test review season, when classes need vocabulary recall without another worksheet packet. The American History puzzle suits document-based-question warm-ups, and the seasonal set — Halloween through summer — handles advisory periods, half-days and the post-exam lull. Answer keys ride along on page two of every PDF.
