Inside the 5th Grade Set
Fifth grade curricula converge on a few big units, and each one has a puzzle: the American Revolution (LIBERTY, PATRIOT, REDCOAT) and Government (CONGRESS, VETO, BALLOT) for social studies; the Human Body, Chemistry and Space Science for the three sciences most 5th grade classes rotate through; and Decimals plus Geometry for math. A dedicated Vocabulary puzzle collects the general academic words — ANALYZE, EVIDENCE, SUMMARIZE — that start appearing in every subject at once.
The Bridge Year Before Middle School
Fifth graders are expected to arrive in middle school already fluent in terms like ECOSYSTEM and CONSTITUTION. The puzzles on this page are deliberately heavier on multi-syllable academic words than our 4th grade set — closer to what a 6th grade textbook will assume. If a student tears through these, they are ready for our 6th grade collection; if the Chemistry or Government grids feel hard, those are exactly the units worth reviewing before the jump.
Teacher Tips for 5th Grade
Use the American Revolution puzzle during your unit as a settle-in starter — ten minutes of hunting for MINUTEMEN beats ten minutes of chatter. The Human Body and Space Science grids work as station activities, and the seasonal puzzles cover party days and the strange half-weeks around holidays. Answer keys are on page two of every PDF, so peer-checking is easy.
