Freshman Year, Covered
The subject puzzles map onto a standard 9th grade schedule. Biology (MITOSIS, PHOTOSYNTHESIS, HOMEOSTASIS) matches the science course most freshmen take; Chemistry and Earth Science cover the alternatives. Algebra carries the math load with the terms every Algebra I student must read fluently. World History and Geography serve social studies, Literature collects the devices freshman English essays hinge on, and Health covers the required half-credit nearly every state schedules in 9th grade.
High School Vocabulary Is a Different Game
The words in these grids are longer and less forgiving than anything in our middle school sets — PHOTOSYNTHESIS does not hide politely. That is deliberate. Freshman-year textbooks assume automatic recognition of exactly this tier of vocabulary, and every extra encounter with a term before it appears in a test question lowers the reading load during the test itself. Students who want more of a specific subject can continue to our dedicated biology and chemistry word search pages.
Study Uses Beyond the Classroom
At this age the puzzles are as likely to be self-study tools as classroom handouts: a Biology grid makes a decent warm-up before flashcard review, and the Health and Literature puzzles work for quiz prep. Teachers still use the seasonal nine — freshman advisory periods and exam-week downtime need material too. As everywhere on this site, the answer key is page two of each PDF.
