American Sign Language (ASL) is a full VISUAL language with its own grammar, used by Deaf communities across the United States and Canada. The first of these two free word searches covers how signing works: the manual ALPHABET used to FINGERSPELL names and new words, and the parts that make up a sign: HANDSHAPE, PALM ORIENTATION, LOCATION, MOVEMENT and facial EXPRESSION. A NAME SIGN, the SIGNER, the THUMB, LETTERS, SPELLING and PRACTICE complete the list.
The second sheet holds signs worth learning first: HELLO, PLEASE, THANK YOU, SORRY, HELP, MORE, MILK, DRINK, MOTHER, FAMILY, FRIEND and I LOVE YOU, plus DEAF, the INTERPRETER, and GALLAUDET, the university in Washington, DC, for Deaf and hard of hearing students. For a fun extra, fingerspell each word to a partner after you circle it. The word list runs easy-to-medium and suits children from about 7 up. Each printable PDF has its answer key on page two.
