Columbus Day is a FEDERAL HOLIDAY in the United States on the SECOND MONDAY of OCTOBER. Many places also, or instead, observe Indigenous Peoples' Day on the same date, so the first of these free puzzles covers both sides of the OBSERVANCE: ITALIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE and the PARADE in many cities, and the INDIGENOUS and NATIVE peoples, such as the TAINO, who already lived in the lands Columbus reached. It is a good starting point for talking about HISTORY, CULTURE and why people COMMEMORATE the day in different ways.
The second sheet tells the story of the 1492 voyage. The EXPLORER and NAVIGATOR from GENOA, backed by ISABELLA and FERDINAND of SPAIN, crossed the ATLANTIC with three ships, the NINA, the PINTA and the SANTA MARIA (the first two were a type of ship called a CARAVEL), steering by COMPASS with a crew of SAILORS and reaching the BAHAMAS and later HISPANIOLA in the CARIBBEAN. The word list is medium and suits children from about 8 up. Answer keys are on page two.
