English language arts has its own vocabulary, and these two free ELA word searches give students a low-stakes way to meet it. The first follows the writing process from BRAINSTORM and OUTLINE to the first DRAFT, then REVISE, EDIT and PUBLISH. It also covers the reading side: finding the MAIN IDEA, making an INFERENCE, citing EVIDENCE, writing a SUMMARY, and telling a NARRATIVE apart from NONFICTION. A THESIS, a PARAGRAPH and an ESSAY complete the list.
The second sheet is grammar and vocabulary: SYNONYM, ANTONYM and HOMOPHONE, PREFIX, SUFFIX and ROOT WORD, CONTEXT CLUES, the DICTIONARY and the THESAURUS, plus PUNCTUATION marks like the COMMA and the APOSTROPHE and the humble CAPITAL letter. Both are printable PDFs with answer keys on page two. The word list runs medium, so they work from about 9 up as a bell-ringer or vocabulary review.
