Johnny Appleseed Day is celebrated on September 26, his birthday, which makes these two free word searches a natural fit for early fall. The first sheet tells his story. His real name was JOHN CHAPMAN, born in LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS, in 1774. A PIONEER nurseryman, he planted apple NURSERY plots ahead of settlers on the FRONTIER in PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO and INDIANA, and travelled as a MISSIONARY too. The LEGEND of a BAREFOOT WANDERER wearing a TINPOT for a hat made him a FOLK HERO.
The second sheet heads into the ORCHARD: a SEEDLING grows into a SAPLING with ROOTS and a BRANCH, then a BLOSSOM, and at HARVEST the PICKING begins, a BASKET or a BUSHEL of APPLES at a time. Many of Chapman's apples went into CIDER. Talk about the CORE, STEM and PEEL as you solve. The word list runs easy-to-medium and suits children from about 7 up, with answer keys included.
