A prefix sits at the front of a base word and changes its meaning. The first of these two free word searches uses the four most common ones: UN- means not or reverse (UNHAPPY, UNFAIR, UNLOCK, UNTIE), RE- means again (REDO, REWRITE, REPLAY, REFILL), PRE- means before (PRETEST, PREVIEW, PREHEAT) and DIS- means not or opposite (DISAGREE, DISLIKE, DISHONEST, DISAPPEAR).
The second sheet flips to the end of the word with suffixes: -FUL means full of (HELPFUL, CAREFUL, POWERFUL), -LESS means without (CARELESS, FEARLESS, SPOTLESS, ENDLESS), -NESS turns a describing word into a thing (KINDNESS, DARKNESS, SOFTNESS, FITNESS), and -ING shows action (JUMPING, SINGING, PAINTING, SWIMMING). Ask children to underline the base word in each one. The word list runs easy-to-medium and suits children from about 7 up. Both PDFs include answer keys.
