Once children can read three-letter words, the next step is short vowels in longer words with blends and digraphs. These two free short vowel word searches are made for that stage. The first covers short a (CLAP, FLAG, CAMP, HAND, BATH), short e (NEST, DESK, TENT, SLED, BELL) and short i (FISH, SWIM, GIFT, PINK, SKIP).
The second covers short o (FROG, SOCK, CLOCK, POND, STOP, SHOP, DOLL) and short u (DUCK, DRUM, TRUCK, JUMP, PLUM, SKUNK, CLUB, BRUSH). Have children say each word aloud and sort the found words by vowel sound. The word list is easy, suiting early readers from about 5 up with a little help. Each printable PDF has the answer key on page two. More in the phonics word searches and the CVC word searches.
